SAN DIEGO, California --- Sophomore guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock) finished off a fine tournament scoring 16 points on seven-for-10 shooting leading Assumption College women's basketball past Slippery Rock, PA University, 65-56, in the second game of the Surf and Slam Tournament hosted by San Diego City College.
Lupien had scored a career-high 23 points in the Greyhounds opening round win over New Haven.
Junior guard/captain BETH PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Lupien earned all-tournament team honors.
The Greyhounds have now won three straight and six of their last seven games to improve to 10-3 overall. Slippery Rock is now 4-7.
After Slippery Rock sophomore guard SANDRA BUSSER (Parma, OH/Padua) converted a layin with 3:08 left in the first half to tie the game at 24-24, the Greyhounds ran off a 9-4 spurt to finish the half ahead 33-28.
Lupien opened the run with a wing three-pointer on a feed from senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) before Slippery Rock senior forward KELLY ANN STAUDINGER (North Canton, OH/Hoover) hit a lane jumper. Lupien and Staudinger then traded wing jumpers to make it 29-28 Greyhounds.
Freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) hit a jumper and senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) made a layin to account for the halftime five-point lead.
The Greyhounds came out strong in the second half outscoring the Rock, 19-7, to move to a 17-point advantage, 52-35, with 11:34 remaining in the game.
Sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) started the half scoring the Hounds' first seven points to increase the lead to nine, 40 31.
Freshman guard JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson) made her first career three-pointer and Parker converted a layup on a feed from Czanecki to make it 52-35.
Floyd finished eight points and 10 rebounds and now has 945 rebounds in her career, while Parker added 14 points and three blocks and Plasski chipped in 12 points and four assists. Staudinger led the Rock with 20 points on nine-for-12 shooting and nine rebounds.
The Greyhounds get into their Northeast-10 Conference schedule WEDNESDAY, January 2, 2008 when they host the University of Massachusetts Lowell at 5:30 p.m. The game will be webcast by NE10-TV.
