Freshman again set pace as Hounds outswim U-New England

BIDDEFORD, Me. --- First-year athletes
continued their dominance scoring 92 points as the Assumption
College women’s swimming team defeated the University of New
England, 125-80, here WEDNESDAY night at the Campus Center
pool. The Greyhounds won eight events, seven by freshmen, en
route to the win.
Freshman JEN RYAN (Weston,
FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) won three individual events, setting a
team-record in the 400-yard individual medley (5:00.98), while
scoring 27 points. She also won the 100-yard freestyle
(58.76) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.31) and currently leads
the Greyhounds with 140.50 points in dual meets.
The team is now 5-1 in head-to-head competition
in just its second year as an intercollegiate sport.
Freshman KAITLIN OWEN
(Bridgewater, MA/Coyle Cassidy) recorded a pair of wins both in
pool-record times. She won the 1,650-yard freestyle event
(19:32.46) more than 13 seconds ahead of New England senior
ALISON LEOPARD (Bloomington, IL)---each posting
times that surpassed Leopard's previous mark set January 17, 2009
at 20:05.85. Owen's 2:25.10 in the 200-yard backstroke bested
the time held by New England’s Courtney Burdick (set January
20, 2007) by 0.01 seconds. She also had a career-best time
(5:11.32) in taking a second-place in the 400-yard individual
medley event. She now has a season-total of 96.50 points.
And, freshman AMANDA GUY
(Lakeville, MA/Apponequet) also won two events, the 200-yard
freestyle (2:08.26) and 500-yard freestyle (5:42.88). She
also had a career-best time (2:27.17) in taking a second place in
the 200-yard butterfly. Her 22 meet points put her over the
century mark at 106.50 for the season.
Sophomore JILL CAPADANNO
(Dracut, MA/Dracut) won the 200-yard butterfly event (2:25.70) and
took a second in the 50-yard freestyle (27.45) to total 14
points. She now has 105.50 points for the season.
Sophomore LIZZIE WAREHAM
(Osterville, MA) won the lone event for the Nor’easters with
a 25.25 time in the 50-yard freestyle event.
UNE (2-1), which goes to Husson
University Saturday (1 p.m.), used two completely different squads
to claim both relay events -- the 200-yard medley and 200-yard
freestyle -- by over three seconds.
The Greyhounds are off until December 5
when they compete at the Bentley University Invitational in
Waltham, while the Nor’easters are next in action SATURDAY at
Husson at 1 p.m.
