WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) scored 16 points to lead three double-figure scorers as Assumption College defeated Adelphi University, 67 46, in Northeast-10 Conference womens basketball action SUNDAY at the Laska Gym.
Junior guard/captain MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy), who added 14 points and senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) with 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots played well in support roles for the Greyhounds. Freshman guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) finished a stat-filled game with nine points, eight assists, five rebounds and a steal. Another freshman, forward COURTNEY DONOVAN (Sagamore Beach, MA/Bourne), added eight points off the-bench.
The Greyhounds team defense was also a major factor in the second half limiting the Panthers to eight-for-27 floor accuracy (.296) and just one for-seven (.143) from three-point territory. Assumption outrebounded the Panthers, 38-26
Sophomore forward THERESA FOLEY (Lake Grove, NY/Centereach) led the Adelphi offense with 12 points and five rebounds.
In the first half freshman center SAMANTHA BRIENDBACH (Northport, NY/Northport) made one-of-two free throws with 3:08 remaining in the first half to make it 27-21 Adelphi.
The Greyhounds then ran the last 12 points of the period to move to a 33-27 advantage at the break. They started the second half with a 9-4 run to make it an 11-point game, 42-31, with 17:19 remaining.
Gibson started the first-half run with a pair of free throws folowed by a lane jumper and then a top-of-the-circle three-pointer as the Greyhounds took the lead, 28-27. A three-pointer by Griffiths and a foul-line jumper by Howard made it a six-point game.
In the second half sophomore forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) started with a twisting move to the basket on a feed from Parker before Adelphi snapped the 14-point run with a jumper by freshman guard ALEXIS WILLIAMS (Annandale, VA/Annandale) and a layup by junior forward ASHLEY CAIAFA (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa),
Gibson then hit a jumper on the wing for the Greyhounds and Parker drilled a corner three-pointer before Gibson finished with a pair of free throws to make it an 11-point game.
Two free throws by Howard with 5:22 remaining gave the Greyhounds their biggest advantage at 22 points, 61-39.
The Greyhounds, now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference are next in action hosting American International College in another NE-10 game WEDNESDAY at 5:30 p.m.
