WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) scored and sophomore forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) each scored 18 points as Assumption College defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 77-65, in Northeast-10 Conference womens basketball action TUESDAY at the Laska Gym.
The Greyhounds are now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while the Owls fall to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Franklin Pierce (4-0), Assumption (5-1) and Pace (5-1) are all virtually tied for first place in the standings.
Meredith completed the double-double with 11 rebounds including six on the offensive glass, while junior forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) scored 16 points with five assists and freshman point guard KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA/Medway) had 12 points and seven assists.
Senior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) scored just four points but with an inside move on a feed from Howard with 6:34 left in the first half became the 18th Greyhound with 1,000 career points.
Senior forward JACQUELINE JOHANNES (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) led the Owls with 18 points, seven rebounds, while senior guard ALLYSON SMITH (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) (16 points, 8 rebounds) and junior center SHELLEY PIERSON (Watervliet, NY/Watervliet) (12 points, 15 rebounds) played well in support roles.
When Pierson made the second of two free throw opportunities with 3:04 remaining in the first half the Owls led 27-25. Griffiths then canned a jumper to tie it and senior guard MEG COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) hit a layup to put the Gryehounds ahead (29-27) to start an 8-4 finish for the Greyhounds as they built a 35-29 halftime advantage.
When Meredith drilled a top-of-the-circle three-pointer with 7:01 remaining in the game it was 60-43. Meredith hit a pair of free throws to build the lead to a game-high 18 points (72-54) with 2:00 left.
The Greyhounds are off for exams and play next at Southern New Hampshire University SUNDAY (December 20).
