Meredith's 26 leads Assumption past Merrimack

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) scored a game-high 26 points to lead Assumption College past Merrimack, 78-54, SATURDAY afternoon in the Laska Gym.
Also playing well in support roles for the Greyhounds were sophomore guard GABRIELLE GIBSON (Amityville, NY/Copiague) (15 points) and sophomore forward SABRINA SICILIANO (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield-Ludlowe) (10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals). Meredith’s performance included seven rebounds and six assists.
Three players scored exactly ten points each to lead the Warriors. Team Captains GENN ROY (Granby, MA/Granby) and SARAH BENISCHEK (Shrub Oak, NY/Lakeland) as well as Junior Forward Valerie Avebe (Yaounde, Cameroon) each had ten points.
The Greyhounds, led by Meredith, went into halftime with a 40-30 advantage. Meredith repeatedly made it to the foul line in the first half, and would score 19 points on only five field goal attempts. The two teams were tied at 24 with 3:36 left in the period when the Greyhounds finished with a 16-6 run, taking the lead on a free throw by Meredith and never looking back.
In the second half, the Warriors were never closer than 10 points. The Greyhounds had balanced scoring in the second half with nine players scoring at least one basket.
The Greyhounds (10-3, 8-1) are next in action TUESDAY when they visit Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill College at 5:30 p.m. Merrimack (6-6, 4-4) is hosting Le Moyne at 5:30 p.m. also on SATURDAY.
