Greyhounds Split Doubleheader with Bridgeport

Ormond Beach, Florida (March 10) -- The Assumption College baseball team split with the University of Bridgeport in a neutral site doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Assumption took the first game as Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) and Matt Metcalf (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) combined for a four-hit shutout on the way to a 5-0 victory. LaRosa went five innings to pick up the victory, while Metcalf pitched the final two innings for a hold.

Leadoff hitter Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) and no. two hitter Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) combined to go 4-for-7 with four runs scored to jump start the Assumption offense.

In the second game, Assumption fell 8-4.  The Greyhounds held a 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh. Bridgeport scored three runs to take a 4-3 lead, but Assumption answered in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth, the Purple Knights scored four runs in the top of the ninth, for the final margin.

Assumption finishes its Florida schedule with a 4-5 record, and will return to action on Wednesday, March 21 at home against American International. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
