Football Downs LIU Post in 37-27 Final

Brookville, N.Y. (November 9) -- Led by a 209-yard rushing performance from senior running back Matt Pedone (Holden, Mass./Wachusett), the Assumption College football team pulled away late for a 37-27 victory over LIU Post in the regular-season finale for both teams. The 209-yard effort is a career high for Pedone and is the single-game high in the Northeast-10 Conference this season.

With the road victory, the Hounds complete the regular season with a perfect 5-0 road record in Northeast-10 play.

The Hounds took the opening kickoff down the field for an early 7-0 lead as junior Matt Heriveaux (Everett, Mass./Malden Catholic) scored up the middle from 14 yards out for his team-best ninth rushing touchdown of the season. Assumption quickly extended that lead into double digits as junior Eddy Frazier (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) pulled down a 17-yard touchdown pass from senior Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) with 6:18 left in first.

Senior kicker Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) made it a 17-0 score late in the opening quarter as he booted his league-best 12th field goal of the season from 38 yards out. LIU Post got on the board in the opening minutes of the second quarter as Steven Laurino rolled out to his right and found Joe Botti in the back of the end zone from 10 yards out to cut the lead to 17-7.

Assumption continued its offensive success on its next drive as a 54-yard run up the near sideline by Pedone made it first and goal for the Hounds from the five yard line. After a penalty backed the Hounds up five yards to the 10-yard line, the drive ended with an eventual touchdown by senior All-American Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) for the 24-7 advantage. Simonson pulled down his fifth touchdown of the year as he caught the ball over a Post defender and kept his feet inbounds for the score.

The Pioneers cut into the lead further with 3:24 left in the second quarter as Laurino found Michael Richardson in the back of the end zone from 36 yards out to make it a 24-14 margin late in the period. On the ensuing Assumption drive, Post safety Chris DiIorio picked off Jordan and returned the ball to the 12 yard line, giving the Pioneers another scoring chance. LIU Post made the Hounds pay on the turnover as Laurino found Botti for his second touchdown of the day and a 24-21 halftime margin.

The scoring slowed in the third quarter, with the lone points of the period coming via a 22-yard field goal from Beuchert for the 27-21 lead. The Hounds increased the lead to a two-score margin with 11:57 left as Beuchert notched his third field goal of the game, kicking it from 26 yards out for the 30-21 advantage.

Assumption got on the board again with 3:15 left as Pedone ran to the right, cut back to the left and dodged three Pioneer defenders before breaking free thru the line and finding the end zone on a 55-yard run for the 37-21 lead. LIU Post added a late touchdown in the final minute on a one-yard TD catch by sophomore Sean Binckes to account for the 37-27 final score.

Jordan completed 16-of-25 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Evan Butters (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) led the team with 75 yards on four receptions. Defensively, senior Mike Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) led the team with 11 tackles, an interception, a pass breakup and a pair of quarterback hurries.

Beuchert finished a perfect 3-for-3 in field goal attempts, along with a 4-for-4 day with extra points. On the season, Beuchert now leads the league with 14 field goals.

For the Pioneers, Laurino was the top quarterback with 164 yards and three touchdowns on 15 completions, while Botti had 137 receiving yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Rob Bright led the Pioneers with 14 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss.
