Time is now for talented Greyhound football . . .

WORCESTER --- Two years ago, the Greyhounds endured a 1-9 season, a season which at times seemed demoralizing, but not enough to count out Assumption's sophomore class. "We were actually in a lot of close games that year, most of them by only about a touchdown," said right offensive tackle Matt Sidebottom, who was starting for the first time that season. "We knew the winning was going to come. Since we've been freshmen, we've been talking about this year."

So Mike Foley possibly could've done without all the phone calls three years ago from his buddy just a few blocks away. Foley, the Holden resident who starred on the Saint John's offensive and defensive lines, had the choices down to two: "Assumption, which is 10 minutes away, and Oberlin, which is 10 hours away."

Brian Kelly '83 Inducted in Assumption College Alumni-Athletics Hall of Fame

If you look up the word "winner" in the dictionary, you would find a picture of Brian Kelly along side. As a player he demonstrated that size was no factor playing stellar middle linebacker for the Greyhounds. As a coach he brought the level of confidence to new heights as the defensive coordinator of the mid 80s. As the Greyhounds softball coach he ushered the team into previously unchartered territory---the postseason regional rankings and 20-plus wins.
Brian K. Kelly has won two national championships while coaching at Grand Valley State University (Grand Rapids, MI), made 19 tackles in the final game of 1981, and raised the softball program to a new level which included two postseason appearances and the first of what is now an annual southern trip.
He has been elected to the Assumption College Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame and was formally inducted August 26 during the annual Football Gala Weekend.

Greyhound Football Prospects Bright As Season Opener Nears

Last year the Assumption College football team solved its time management problem by creating a quality running game accounting for over 125 yards/game. This year, as preseason camp opens in a few short weeks, third-year Coach Cory Bailey's first order of duty will be to retool his offensive skill positions however good news is that four quality starters return for their third year on the offensive line. Defensively, the Greyhounds are solid along the front four with the Kelly Brothers expected to play a dominating role. The secondary, led by safeties Peter Milligan and Chris Martino, is among the hardest hitting groups in the conference. If the linebacking corps retools to effectiveness --- they lost three 200-tackle people--- then the defense will be among the conference leaders. This version of the Hounds is the biggest and most athletic collection the program has fielded in years. With all this new athleticism and speed available, it is Bailey's hope that he can turn every game into a track meet. This will be a different Assumption College football team, dominated by strong front walls---both offensively and defensively and speedy, athletic skill people.
