In the hardwood equivalent of The Field Of Dreams , I was treated to my own personal episode of "If you build it they will come."

Greyhound women and men's basketball opens Northeast-10 Conference playoff action Monday, Tuesday in Laska Gym

WORCESTER, Mass. --- To say that the basketball seasons at Assumption College have been ultra successful and satisfying would be a gross misunderstatement. The Greyhounds are one of only three New England institutions with TWO 20-game winners. Only Division I Connecticut and Division III Amherst can make the same claim. The women's team has posted a 21-8 overall record tying the team-record for wins in a season (21-9 in 2003-04) and have earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference playoffs. Last year the team finished 13-16 overall (9-13 in the conference) and was 1-1 as the No. 9 seed the conference playoffs. This is the fourth 20-win season for the team since 1999-00. The men's team is currently 20-9 overall, winning 20 times for the 14th time in their long and storied history. They have also earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. Last year the team finished 11-17 overall (9-13 in the conference)
The two teams are among the most improved in the region . . . last year posting a cumulative 24-33 overall mark (18-26 in the conference) and this year with a 41-17 mark to date (29-15 conference) . . . an improvement of 17 victories! In addition, women's coach KERRY PHAYRE has improved her career win total with the Greyhounds to 196, while men's coach SERGE DE BARI '71 has improved his win total to 96.

"Little Danny Gearin, a home-grown product, perpetuated the greatest upset the auditorium has ever known last night when he blithely swished home a free throw after playing time had expired, to shove Assumption College's perky upstarts to a 69-68 victory over Holy Cross." It was March 7, 1957 - 50 years ago! Worcester Telegram Sports Editor Paul Johnson's memorable first paragraph said it all. Assumption College, a school with barely more than 100 students, knocking off the former N.I.T. and N.C.A.A. champions from across town. It was then, and still is today, the single most important date in Assumption College athletics history. When the tornado ripped through the old campus on June 9, 1953, the rebuilding process began immediately. It was the idea of then President Rev. Armand Desautels, A.A. to give scholarships for basketball in the hope it would help raise awareness and much-needed funds. By 1957, the College had relocated to a brand new campus and the basketball team finished 21-1 as the premier small college team in New England.
