Ice Hockey Tops Worcester State 3-2

THE BASICS:

Lead: Senior Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass./ Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL)) and junior Matt Damelio (Rochester, N.Y. / Northwood (Prep)) each recorded two points to lift the Assumption College ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Worcester State in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Hounds struck first with 12:42 left in the first as freshman John Chamberlain (Amesbury, Mass. / Williston Northampton School)) scored off assists from Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass./ Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL)) and Matt Damelio (Rochester, N.Y. / Northwood (Prep)). 

- Worcester State tied the game seven minutes later, as Mitchell Purdie beat  David Zulauf (Rochester, MI./ Bridgton Academy (Prep)). Matthew Manning and Mike Moran were credited with the assists.  

- Only 47 seconds into the second period, Laughlin added a goal assisted by Peter McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa. / Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Elite)) to break the tie and claim the 2-1 lead. 

- At 8:35 in the second Damelio dished off his second assist of the night to senior Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Boston Bandits (EHL)) to extend the lead to 3-1. Junior Kieran Peters (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia / Bridgton Academy (Prep)) also tallied an assist on the play. 

- With just 4:31 remaining the Lancers came within one as forward Mike Palmer scored to make the score 3-2. With 57 seconds left in regulation Worcester State pulled goaltender Cory Lignelli, but it was not enough as the Assumption defense held on to win the game 3-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- The Hounds outshot the Lancers 26-22 and neither team capitalized on a power play. Laughlin and Damelio each had a multipoint game, and it was Laughlin's eighth multi-point game of the year.

- Zulauf made saves 20 saves in the win while Aaron Callan and Lignelli combined for 23 saves in the loss. Zulauf improved to 9-5-1 with the victory, becoming the first goalie since 2011-12 with nine wins in a season.
