WORCESTER, Mass. - After their first NE10 Tournament appearance since 2009, the Assumption College men's soccer team was selected 7th in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference today.
It is the highest ranking the team has recieved in the preseason poll since 2011, when they were also picked 7th. Last season the Hounds went 7-10-1 in regualr season play and 6-6-1 in conference play to earn their first NE10 conference playoff bid since 2009. The Hounds made it to the first round of NE Tournament and fell to the number three seed Le Moyne 1-0 in overtime.
Taking the top spot in the poll was Adelphi with 168 points along with 12 of 14 first place votes. The Panthers won the NE10 Championship last season after defeating Le Moyne 2-1. Southern New Hampshire was voted second with 147 points. The Penmen fell to Franklin Pierce in the NE10 quarterfinals after a recording a 12-5-2 overall record and a 8-3-2 conference record. Le Moyne was ranked third in the poll with 142 votes and two first place votes after earning a 14-5-2 overall record and a 9-3-1 conference record.
Rounding out the top five were Merrimack (138) and Franklin Pierce (126). Southern Connecticut was ranked sixth with 96 points, while Asssumption was just five points shy ranked seventh. American International College (90), Saint Rose (64), and Stonehill (61) concluded the top ten. New Haven (55), Saint Michael's (43), Bentley (37), and Saint Anselm (16) finished the poll respectively.
The season kicks off Friday September 1, as Bentley, Saint Michael's and Merrimack travel to play non-conference games. The Hounds will begin their season Saturday September 2 at 1 pm against Daemen in a non-conference match up.
