Hounds Jakiel Leads New Britain Tennis Surge

CHESHIRE, CT - In a few weeks Rich Jakiel will return to Assumption College to begin his sophomore year as a business management major. And while some of his classmates will have spent the summer working at large corporations to gain experience, Jakiel will have them all beat, thanks to his busy summer. "I certainly think of this as a phenomenal learning experience for the future," said Jakiel, a 19-year-old from New Britain. "There's some organization, management and budgeting involved in what I do." Apparently, Jakiel is also working on a minor in understatement.

Greyhounds mens tennis downs Bryant (9-0) wins ninth straight Northeast-10 regular-season title

Junior ANTONIO RECALDE finished a superb individual regular-season at No. 1 singles for the undefeated Assumption College men's tennis team with a near flawless week while leading the Greyhounds to their ninth consecutive Northeast-10 Conference regular-season championship. Only the Springfield College women's cross country (1983-94) with 11 straight championships owns a streak longer than the Greyhounds. Bryant University golf won nine straight (1983-91) titles and Stonehill College women's lacrosse has won the last eight championships and is in position to make it nine straight. The 40th-ranked team in the April 6 I.T.A. national poll (fourth in the region), the Greyhounds defeated Bryant University (9-0) for their conference-record 114th consecutive victory as Recalde won 6-0, 6-0 over Dylan Whiting. This past week Recalde won all five of his matches and four of them by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Only American International's Peter Almlof managed to take a point as Recalde won their match 6-1, 6-1. For the season Recalde won six matches against conference competition by shut outs. The Greyhounds are now 13-0 overall this season and completed the Northeast-10 Conference portion of their schedule 11-0. They will attempt to win their ninth straight conference postseason tournament championship beginning Friday hosting Southern New Hampshire. The Hounds have won their last 19 postseason conference matches consecutively.

Greyhounds mens tennis ups Northeast-10 win streak to amazing 111 consecutive with wins over Bentley, Pace

WALTHAM, Mass. --- Senior captain MATT STOPP continued his assault on the Assumption College individual record book leading the Greyhounds past Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley College, 8-1, in men's tennis action here TUESDAY. (Thursday, the Hounds defeated Pace University, 9-0.) With the victories the Greyhounds, ranked No. 40 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association National poll, have now won 111 consecutive matches against Northeast-10 Conference opponents dating back to the 1997-98 season. It is the longest win streak in the conference's history regardless of sport. The Greyhounds, ranked fourth in the ITA East poll, are now 9-0 overall, 7-0 in conference play---in familiar position in first place. The Falcons, ranked eighth in the ITA East, are now 9-9 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Assumption has won crucial conference matches against then-undefeated Stonehill (8-1) and now once beaten Bentley to assume control of first place. The team has a busy upcoming schedule, weather permitting, hosting Pace (Thursday), Saint Anselm (Friday), playing at American International (Saturday) and hosting Bryant (Sunday). The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs---won by the Greyhounds every year since 1998---are slated for Wednesday (18th), Saturday (21st) and Sunday (22nd) of next week. The N.C.A.A. regionals are slated for May 3, 4, and 5.

The Greyhounds have since rolled past Bryant (8-1), Merrimack (9-0), American International (9-0) and Franklin Pierce (9-0) to clinch their eighth-straight regular-season championship. The team has won an incredible 97 of 99 points played in the conference this year, while last year they won all 99 points --- that's 196 of the last 198 points!
