Greyhounds Finish Third at 2011 NEISDA Championships
White River Junction, Vt. (February 21) -- At the 2011 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships held last week, the Assumption women’s swimming and diving team finished third among 21 schools and second among Northeast-10 schools. Bentley won the overall title, followed by Keene State.
The Greyhounds finished with 1,029 points and were led by a first-place finish from freshman standout Monique Haney (Rialto, Calif./Bloomington), who easily won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:05.45, winning the race by over 12 seconds. Haney will find out this week whether she will qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championships. The Greyhounds finished 1-2 in that event as sophomore Amanda Guy (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet) placed second in 5:17.48. Guy also swam in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in seventh place with a time of 2:02.32.
Also winning her event was sophomore Jennifer Ryan (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), who took the 100-yard individual medley. Ryan finished in a time of 1:01.63, winning the event by a mere .20 seconds. Ryan nearly pulled off the sweep as she placed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.48. Following her in the 200 was freshman Maureen Quirk (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) in sixth with a time of 2:20.31.
Sophomore Kaitlin Owen (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) placed third in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:19.60, as well as finishing sixth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:55.81. Also swimming in the 400 was senior Jess Wolter (Stonington, Conn./Stonington), who finished eighth in 2:24.78. Freshman Carly Eckles (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) finished sixth in the 50-yard backstroke in 28.96, along with a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.51. Freshman Jill Burke (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) was eighth in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:03.31.
Other individual finishers included freshman Caroline Papachriston (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) in the 50-yard breaststroke and Meaghan Shea (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Lutheran Academy) in the 1650-yard freestyle. Papachriston finished seventh in a time of 32.58, while Smith was sixth with a finish of 18:50.42.
Four Assumption relay teams also placed in the top five, led by a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a finish of 8:03.34. The 400-yard freestyle relay team was fourth in 3:42.06, while the 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams both placed fifth. The medley team finished in 4:11.18, while the freestyle team touched in 1:42.86.
