Hounds Finish in Second at Worcester City Championships
Worcester, Mass. -- The Assumption women’s swimming and diving team placed second at the 2012 Worcester City Championships, hosted by Holy Cross over the weekend. The Hounds finished with 446 total points, placing second to Division I Holy Cross.
Leading the way for Assumption was junior Kerry Silva (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk), who picked up victories in the 1650 and 500 freestyle events. Silva won the 1650 in a time of 18:16.46, capturing first by a mere .11 seconds. In the 500, Silva touched in 5:23.31 to win by just under one second.
Sophomore Monique Haney (Rialto, Calif./Bloomington) was victorious as well, taking the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:13.37 to win the event by over two seconds. Haney also placed second in the 200 IM in 2:17.13, finishing .06 seconds in front of teammate Jennifer Ryan (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) in third. Ryan also placed third in the 200 yard freestyle, finishing that event in 2:02.48 as she narrowly missed on second place. Haney added a second-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly as well, finishing that race in 1:02.23.
In the 100 backstroke, the Hounds placed two swimmers among the top three with sophomore Carly Eckles (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) and freshman Katherine Medeiros (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang), the three-time Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week. Eckles finished second in 1:03.05, followed by Medeiros in 1:04.55. Eckles was also second in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:14.79.
Sophomore Rachel Pellegrine (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) posted a top-three finish as well, as she was third in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:15.11. Pellegrine also placed third in the 200 breaststroke, touching in 2:42.61 to take third by just .02 seconds.
In the relays, Assumption had a pair of second-place finishes to help power the team to the second-place finish in the overall championship. In the 400-yard medley relay, the team finished second in a time of 4:12.07, placing second to the host Crusaders. The Hounds were also second in the 200 yard medley relay, finishing that event in 1:58.88.
Assumption returns to action on Saturday, January 28th as the team travels to Elms College for a tri-meet with Elms and Regis.
