Greyhounds Shine at New England Catholic Invitational
Chestnut Hill, Mass. -- At the season-opening New England Catholic Invitational at Boston College, the Assumption College swimming team posted a 3-3 mark that included the program’s first-ever victory over Holy Cross. The Hounds placed a number of athletes among the top 3-5 in numerous events, including a victory in the 100-yard butterfly for freshman Katherine Medeiros (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang).
Medeiros captured the event in a time of 1:01.39, outdistancing Kaela Bjornberg of Siena by .29 seconds. Sophomore Maureen Quirk (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) also swam well in the event, placing fifth in a time of 1:04.09. In the 1000-yard freestyle, freshman Kerry Silva (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) posted a hard-fought second-place finish in 10:52.61, beating out Andrea King of Boston College for second. Sophomore Monique Haney (Rialto, Calif./Bloomington), last year’s Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year, finished fifth in the event in a time of 11:15.08.
In addition to her success in the 100-yard butterfly, Medeiros also swam well in the 100 freestyle, placing fourth in a time of 56.69. Silva swam well in the 200 freestyle as well, touching in sixth place with a time of 2:02.93. Sophomore Carly Eckles (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.22, while freshman Elise Prayson (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) came in sixth at 1:11.99 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Prayson also performed well in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in fourth place in 2:36.09.
Haney swam her best individual race of the meet in the 200-yard butterfly as she placed second in 2:12.92, following to Stephanie Ng of Boston College by just 1.44 seconds. In the 200-yard backstroke, the Hounds had two top finishers as Eckles came in third at 2:16.12, along with sophomore Jill Burke (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) in sixth at 2:18.29.
In the 500-yard freestyle, the Hounds placed three swimmers among the top seven finishers, led by Silva and Haney in second and third place, respectively. Silva touched in a time of 5:24.42, followed by Haney at 5:27.52. Sophomore Meaghan Shea (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Lutheran Academy) finished in seventh at 5:40.76, missing on a top-five showing by less than one second.
In the relays, the Hounds had two teams place among the top four, led by a second-place finish by the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Silva, Quirk, Jennifer Ryan (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Haney in a time of 3:52.37. The 400-yard medley relay team finished in fourth in their race, touching in a time of 4:11.63.
As a team, the Hounds registered victories over Holy Cross (193-147), Le Moyne (202.50-129.50) and Regis (260-41), while falling to Division I foes Boston College, Iona and Siena.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, October 29 as the Hounds travel to Gannon University to take on Gannon and Lake Erie, beginning at 1 p.m.
