Prayson Sets School Record as Hounds Travel to Gannon
Gannon, Pa. -- The Assumption women’s swimming team competed on Saturday afternoon in a tri-meet at Gannon University, where the Hounds swam against both Gannon and Lake Erie. The Hounds defeated Lake Erie by a 100-22 margin and fell to No. 15 ranked Gannon, 84-38.
Highlighting the day was a school-record performance in the 200-yard breaststroke from freshman Elise Prayson (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter). Prayson finished third overall in the event with a time of 2:33.93, breaking the previous record of 2:36.49 set last year by Jennifer Ryan (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas). Prayson placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke as well, finishing in a time of 1:11.32, as well as fifth in the 200 IM at 2:20.73.
The Hounds opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing in a time of 4:10.00. Junior Kerry Silva (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) gave the Hounds their first victory of the meet in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in 10:59.60. Sophomore Meaghan Shea (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Lutheran Academy) also swam well in the event, finishing in third place with a time of 11:30.44. Silva later followed that up with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle as well, finishing first in a time of 5:22.98. Shea placed fourth in the 500 free also, in a time of 5:38.15, along with freshman Sarah Pucci (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) in fifth at 5:43.67.
Sophomore Monique Haney (Rialto, Calif./Bloomington) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in a time of 2:14.34 to win the event by .23 seconds. She also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:02.38, along with a third-place showing in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:19.94. Sophomore Maureen Quirk (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:19.76, finishing just .28 seconds out of third.
Sophomore Carly Eckles (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) posted second-place finishes in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, finishing in times of 1:02.42 and 2:15.60, respectively. Sophomore Jill Burke (No. Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) was fourth in the 100 at 1:05.53, followed by junior Kaitlin Owen (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) in fifth at 1:08.43. Burke also posted a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:16.56.
Freshman Katherine Medeiros (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) swam well in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races, placing third in each of them. Medeiros finished the 50 in a time of 26.16, followed by a time of 56.42 in the 100 free. She also finished in second in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:00.83, which was just .42 seconds behind the winner.
In the 50, Eckles was fourth in 26.77, followed by junior Amanda Guy (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet) in fifth at 27.41. In the 100, Guy was fourth in 1:00.04, followed by sophomore Katie Huling (Sparkill, N.H./Tappan Zee) in fifth at 1:00.74.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Saturday, November 5th as the team travels to the New England Invitational in White River Junction, Vt., beginning at 1 p.m.
