Hounds Swim Past Mount Holyoke in Home Opener
Worcester, Mass. (November 11) -- The Assumption College women’s swimming team opened up its 2011-12 home schedule with a 148-108 victory over Mount Holyoke on Friday evening at the Plourde Recreation Center. The Hounds return to action on Sunday afternoon at Noon, hosting Le Moyne College and Pace University in a tri-meet.
The Hounds began the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in a pool-record time of 1:56.48, anchored by sophomore Monique Haney (Rialto, Calif./Bloomington). Haney picked up the victory in the 1000-yard freestyle as well, winning that event in a time of 11:12.21 to lead a sweep of the top three spots in that race. Sophomore Meaghan Shea (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Lutheran Academy) was second in the race at 11:24.24, followed by sophomore Jill Burke (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) in third at 11:32.03.
Junior Kerry Silva (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.60, followed by junior Jennifer Ryan (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) in second at 2:06.22. Sophomore Carly Eckles (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) set the first individual pool record of the evening in the 50-yard backstroke, finishing up in 29.74. She was followed by Katherine Medeiros (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang), the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, who was second in 30.43.
Another pool record fell in the 50-yard breaststroke as freshman Elise Prayson (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) finished up in 33.23, defeating Maya Lazarovich by just .17 seconds for the win. Haney continued the winning streak for the Hounds in the 100-yard butterfly, taking the race in 1:03.80. She finished just .12 ahead of second-place Silva, while junior Kaitlin Owen (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) was third in 1:06.62. Lauren Williams of Mount Holyoke took the 50-yard freestyle in a pool-record time of 26.29 and was followed by Prayson and Maureen Quirk (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) in second and third. Prayson finished in 26.58, along with 26.63 for Quirk.
Ryan placed second in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.64, just .13 seconds behind victorious Lydia Bowers of Mount Holyoke. Eckles added to her strong outing with a pool-record time of 1:02.95 to win the 100-yard backstroke, while Prayson won the 100-yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 1:10.90.
Quirk won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:32.80, followed by Amanda Guy (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet) in 5:36.75. Freshman Christa Bodemann (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) also claimed a victory as she won the 50-yard butterfly by just .27 seconds, finishing up in 29.09.
