Hounds Drop 70-55 Final to Pace on Senior Day

Worcester, Mass. (February 18) -- Assumption cut a 24-point deficit down to four points in the second half, but could get no closer as the Greyhounds dropped a 70-55 home final to Pace University on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. Assumption is receiving votes in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top 25 Poll and is ranked sixth in the first NCAA East Regional Top-10 Poll.

Pace came out firing in the opening minutes and within five minutes had jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind eight early points from senior Brittany Shields. The Hounds got on the board on a layup from Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague), but the Setters kept up the pressure and led by as many as 24 points at 30-6 with seven minutes left in the half. Assumption closed the half on a 19-5 run though and cut the lead down to eight with 1:23 left before heading to halftime trailing by a 35-25 margin. Senior All-American candidate Kelly Meredith (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) sparked the offense at the end of the opening period as she ended the half with 13 points.

The Hounds closed to within four at 37-33 on a layup from Gibson before the Setters extended the lead back to eight. Assumption pulled within a six-point margin at 47-41 with 7:27 left, but that was the closest they would get as the Setters closed on an 11-6 run over the final three minutes.

Prior to the game, the Hounds honored seniors Nicole LePrevost (Lee, Mass./Lee) and Kelly Meredith, along with four-year team manager Kelsey Fitzpatrick, as part of Senior Day.

Meredith led all scorers with 20 points, along with 16 from Gibson. Shields paced four Setters in double figures with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

With the loss, the Hounds drop to 17-8 overall and 14-7 in Northeast-10 play, while the Setters improve to 19-6 overall, 16-5 in the league and clinch a Northeast-10 Tournament Quarterfinal home game.

Assumption closes out the regular season on Tuesday, February 21st as the Hounds travel to American International for a 5:30 p.m. start in Springfield, Mass.
