WORCESTER, Mass. --- It is a double sweet day for Assumption College basketball.
Greyhound women and men's basketball opens Northeast-10 Conference playoff action Monday, Tuesday in Laska Gym

WORCESTER, Mass. --- To say that the basketball seasons at Assumption College have been ultra successful and satisfying would be a gross misunderstatement. The Greyhounds are one of only three New England institutions with TWO 20-game winners. Only Division I Connecticut and Division III Amherst can make the same claim. The women's team has posted a 21-8 overall record tying the team-record for wins in a season (21-9 in 2003-04) and have earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference playoffs. Last year the team finished 13-16 overall (9-13 in the conference) and was 1-1 as the No. 9 seed the conference playoffs. This is the fourth 20-win season for the team since 1999-00. The men's team is currently 20-9 overall, winning 20 times for the 14th time in their long and storied history. They have also earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. Last year the team finished 11-17 overall (9-13 in the conference)
The two teams are among the most improved in the region . . . last year posting a cumulative 24-33 overall mark (18-26 in the conference) and this year with a 41-17 mark to date (29-15 conference) . . . an improvement of 17 victories! In addition, women's coach KERRY PHAYRE has improved her career win total with the Greyhounds to 196, while men's coach SERGE DE BARI '71 has improved his win total to 96.

WALTHAM, Mass. --- In a night of historic facts Assumption College women's basketball defeated Bentley College, 59-58, TUESDAY night at the Dana Center. The win marked the first for the Greyhound women in Waltham since the very first meeting between the two teams in 1974-75 . . . the Hounds winning that game, 70-42 . . . 31 games ago. It also marked the first time that the Greyhounds have swept the regular-season series, having won 75-64 in Worcester (12/01/2007). The win also denied the Falcons a piece of history losing in their 1,000th game and denying the home team its 800th victory. Bentley basketball will seek the now elusive 800th Saturday at Saint Michael's. And, finally the Greyhounds are now 21-6 overall---tying the team record for most wins in a season previously set with a 21-9 record in 2003-04. They improved to 15-5 in conference play, clinching at least third-place and trailing only Stonehill (17-3) and Franklin Pierce (16-4) with two games remaining. They will host Southern New Hampshire Saturday and play at Pace next Tuesday.
