Greyhounds Improve to 4-0 In 15-14 OT Win
Worcester, Mass. (March 13) -- The Assumption College women's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 with a 15-14 overtime victory over Queens College at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn. / Amity) and junior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough) led the attack for Assumption with four goals each. Sophomore Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk), senior Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H. / Souhegan), and junior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) each had two goals in the win.
The Greyhounds trailed 6-3 heading into halftime, but exploded for 10 goals in the second half, leading by as many as three, 11-8, before allowing the Knights to tie the score and force overtime.
O'Rourke keyed the Greyhound rally with two goals as Assumption scored four of the first five times coming out of halftime. O'Rourke's second goal tied the game at seven with 22:53 to play in the game.
Queens briefly took the lead back on a goal by Heather Rosen, before Assumption potted four-consecutive goals to take an 11-8 lead. Hagerman scored twice in that stretch, while McNeil and Auger each added a marker.
The Knights responded with three goals in less than two minutes to tie the score at 11, and the teams traded goals for the remainder of regulation.
In overtime Beall got the Greyhounds on the board with a goal off the draw 11 seconds in. Queens answered right back with a goal of their own 13 seconds later to tie the game at 14, before McNeil scored the game-winner in the second-half of the overtime period.
Junior Mary Guinee (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet) was a standout in the midfield for the Greyhounds, picking up a game-high 10 draw controls, which helped give Assumption a commanding 21-11 lead in that department for the game. Guinee added four ground balls and three caused turnovers for a strong overall game. Beall was second on the team with eight draw controls, while Hagerman and sophomore Rebecca Cann (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) each picked up four ground balls to tie for the team lead.
Junior Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) made 11 saves to earn the victory as Assumption improves to 4-0, and will return to action on Saturday, March 20 at American International College. The game will begin at 12 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
