Hounds Stay Unbeaten in 15-11 Win Over AIC

Springfield, Mass. (March 16) -- The Assumption College women's lacrosse team defeated American International College, 15-11, to improve to 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds are 5-0 for the second time in school history, with the last time coming in 1998 when the team finished with a 7-2 record in the first year of the program. The Greyhounds are one of two Northeast-10 Conference teams with an unbeaten record, matching Adelphi University at 5-0 with 2-0 records in league play.

Sophomore's Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk), and Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn. / Amity) keyed an offensive attack for Assumption that saw six different Greyhounds score. The combination of Auger and McNeil totaled 13 points, as Auger had an eight-point outburst with six goals and two assists. McNeil scored five goals to bring her season total to 29.

The Greyhounds shot 40.5 percent in the game, while the Yellow Jackets shot 45.8 percent, but Assumption held a commanding 37 to 24 edge in shots in the game and put 83.8 percent of its shots on net.

Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass. / Holliston)Steph O'Rourke (Amhert, N.H. / Souhegan)and Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough), and Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) each added one goal for Assumption, while Hagerman also tallied an assist in the win.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the first 16 minutes of play as McNeil and Auger each tallied two goals. O'Rourke capped the run with her seventh goal of the season, giving the Greyhounds the four-goal edge with 14:37 to play in the first half.

After six scoreless minutes, the Yellow Jackets scored three of the next four goals in the game over a six-minute span to cut the Greyhound lead to one with 2:13 remaining in the half. McNeil had the lone goal for the Greyhounds during that stretch on an unassisted marker at the 4:46 mark in the first half.

Beall gave the Greyhounds a two-goal edge heading into halftime after converting a free position shot attempt with 50 seconds to play in the half. The Greyhounds led 7-5 going into the break.

The Greyhounds went on a three-goal run coming out of halftime to extend the lead to five, 10-5, as Auger accounted for points on all three goals. Auger scored back-to-back goals over a 12-second span, before assisting a goal by Santos with 23:50 to play in the game, giving the Greyhounds their largest advantage in the game.

The Yellow Jackets again rallied, scoring three consecutive goals and four of the next five goals in the game to cut the Greyhound lead to one, 11-10. Auger tallied her fifth goal of the game over that stretch, but Whitney McKay's 11th goal of the season cut the lead to one with 13:52 remaining in the game.

With the game once again within one, the Greyhounds went on another run as Hagerman and McNeil scored back-to-back goals to give Assumption a three-goal edge. The Yellow Jackets scored once more as Brittany Flynn scored her sixth goal of the game to make the score 13-11, before Auger and McNeil each scored another goal for the final score.

The Greyhounds improve to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play.

O'Rourke was key on the draw control, picking up a team-high eight as the Greyhounds held a slight 15-13 edge in that department.

Sophomore's Rebecca Cann (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) and Allison Tivnan (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) anchored the defense that caused 17 turnovers as Cann forced a team-high four turnovers, while Tivnan caused two Yellow Jacket miscues. Tivnan also picked up a team-high four groundballs. Freshman Meghan Curtin (Chester, N.J. / West Morris) and junior Mary Guinee (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet) also caused two turnovers for the Greyhound defense.

Junior Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) made seven saves to earn her fifth victory of the season. The goaltender rallied to make six saves in the second half after stopping only one shot in the first half.

The Greyhounds return to action on Wednesday, March 20th as the team will play host to Stonehill College. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
