Worcester, Mass. (March 20) -- The Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-7 final to Stonehill College at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Skyhawks were ranked 10th in the latest IWLCA National Poll, while the Greyhounds were receiving votes in the poll.
The Greyhounds fall to 5-1 on the season with the loss, including a 2-1 record in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Stonehill improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Stonehill jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on scores by four different players. Kelsey Shannahan scored twice during that stretch as the Skyhawks built the lead to six with 15:12 remaining in the first half.
The Greyhounds rallied with back-to-back free position shot conversions by senior Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H. / Souhegan) and sophomore Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn. / Amity) to cut the lead to two, 6-2.
Heather Sullivan added another goal for the Skyhawks, her second of the game, to extend the lead to five, before McNeil brought the Greyhounds back within four on her second goal of the game with 10:34 to play in the first half.
After five scoreless minutes the Skyhawks rattled off three straight goals to extend their lead to seven, 10-3, with 2:46 remaining. That would be the largest lead of the first half for Stonehill.
McNeil again tried to get the Greyhounds back into it with her third goal of the first half, converting a free position shot attempt with one second to play.
Coming out of halftime the Skyhawks went on another run with three straight goals to extend the lead to nine, 13-4, before O'Rourke stopped the run with a free position shot.
Overall the Skyhawks outscored the Greyhounds, 8-3, in the second half on the way to an 18-7 final. McNeil finished the night with a team-high four goals, while O'Rourke was the lone other Greyhound with multiple goals with two. The sophomore, McNeil now has a team-high 33 goals through six games for Assumption. Senior Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass. / Holliston) had the final goal for the Greyhounds, a free position shot with 16:09 to play in the game.
The Greyhounds converted 6-of-8 free position attempts, while Stonehill went 1-for-3 on the night. McNeil went 3-for-4 on the night, while O'Rourke went 2-for-2 and Santos went 1-for-1.
Assumption also held a 15-11 edge on the draw control, but was out shot 26 to 21. Stonehill also held a 31-24 edge in ground balls.
Sophomore Rebecca Cann (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) picked up a team-high five ground balls and caused three turnovers for Assumption, while junior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) and Mary Guinee (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet) had a strong night on the draw control, each picking up five. O'Rourke and sophomore Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) each picked up four ground balls, tied for second on the team.
Junior Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y, Deer Park) took the loss for the Greyhounds to fall to 5-1 on the season with a 2-1 record in league play.
The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, March 23rd at Southern New Hampshire University. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
