Worcester, Mass. (March 24) - -The Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-11 final to Molloy College at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds fall to 5-3 overall with the loss and remain at 2-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Molloy improves to 5-5 on the season and remains 1-0 in ECC play.
The Greyhounds carried a 7-5 lead into halftime as senior captains Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H. / Souhegan) and Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass. / Holliston) each scored twice in the half. Junior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury), Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk), and Amy Mcneil (Orange, Conn. / Amity) each added a goal in the half to help the Greyhounds maintain a lead.
The Lions outscored the Greyhounds nine to four in the second half on the way to the victory.
Assumption jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Beall, O'Rourke, and Santos scored in succession. Molloy answered with consecutive goals before Santos and Auger added goals to extend the lead back up to three, 5-2.
The Lions rattled off three straight goals to even the score before O'Rourke and McNeil scored in the final three minutes to give the Greyhounds the edge heading into the break.
The teams traded goals coming out of the half as Molloy struck first but junior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough) answered with her 13th goal of the season to push the Greyhound lead back to two, 8-6, with 26:12 remaining in the game. The goal marked the final time the Greyhounds would hold a two-goal lead.
After Molloy recorded back-to-back goals to even the score, Auger added her second goal of the game to give the Greyhounds a 9-8 lead, their final lead of the day.
The Lions rattled off three straight goals, including back-to-back goals by Samantha Arlotta, to take an 11-9 lead with 16:25 to play.
McNeil got the Greyhounds within one, 11-10, with her 39th goal of the season as she converted a free position shot with 10:38 to play in the game. Kaitlynn Kelly extended the lead back to two with a goal before Santos added her third goal of the game, an unassisted marker with 5:32 to play in the game to draw the score within one with 5:32 to play in the game.
The Greyhounds were unable to convert again the rest of the way as Molloy scored twice in the final two minutes for the 14-11 final.
Beall led the way on the draw control with give, while Santos was second on the team with three. The Greyhounds held a slight 14-13 edge in draw controls in the game.
The Greyhounds also held a 22-18 edge in ground balls but turned the ball over 15 times to the Lions 10.
Assumption will return to action on Wednesday, March 27th against Saint Anselm College. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
