Worcester, Mass. (March 27) -- The Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-9 final to Saint Anselm College at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Greyhounds trailed 8-3 at halftime, the Greyhounds had a strong second half in which the teams played even and each scored six goals on the way to the 14-9 final.
The teams traded goals early as Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) and Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass. / Holliston) provided unassisted goals over the first 11 minutes of action. Santos scored to tie the game at two with 19:02 to play in the first half.
The Hawks started to pull away with three consecutive goals over the next 10 minutes. Kelly Pickett scored twice for Saint Anselm and Marissa Daly scored the second of her four goals with 9:20 to play in the half to push the Hawk lead to three, 5-2.
Sophomore Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn. / Amity) got the Greyhounds within two on her 40th goal of the season before the Hawks scored the final three goals of the half on the way to the five-goal halftime advantage.
Coming out of the half the Greyhounds scored three of the first five goals as Santos, McNeil and junior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) each added markers to cut the lead to four, 10-6.
In the early part of the second half junior goaltender Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) made several key saves to keep the score within reach. She finished with 13 saves while picking up the loss.
After the Beall free position shot cut the lead to four, Saint Anselm answered with a goal of its own to extend the lead back to five. Santos converted another free position shot for Assumption with 9:42 to play in the game to cut the lead back to four but that is as close as Assumption would get the rest of the way.
The Hawks scored three straight times to extend the lead to seven, 14-7, before Auger and McNeil added back-to-back goals for the final margin. McNeil and Santos each led Assumption with three goals while Auger found the back of the net twice. Beall was the final Greyhound with a marker.
The Greyhounds fall to 5-4 on the season and 2-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the loss, while Saint Anselm improves to 6-1 and 3-0 in league play.
Assumption will be back in action on Saturday, March 30 against Saint Michael's College. The Greyhounds will host the Purple Knights at the Multi-Sport Stadium with the game starting at 1:00 p.m.
