Volleyball Drops a Pair of Matches on Saturday

THE BASICS:

Score: Nyack 3, Assumption 1; NYIT 3, Assumption 1

Records Game One: Nyack (1-3), Assumption (0-1)

Records Game Two: NYIT (4-1), Assumption (0-2)

Location: Old Westbury, N.Y. (Recreation Hall)

The Lead: Assumption took the opening set in matches against Nyack and NYIT on Saturday, but weren't able to come away with victories as the team dropped consecutive 3-1 matches on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Senior Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake)  started the scoring spree in the first set to help the Hounds take a lead as they earned a 25-17 victory.

- The second set was a battle for the Hounds with Nyack keeping at least a one point lead before eventually pulling away for a 25-17 win.

- Assumption jumped out to a quick start in the third set, leading 7-1 off a kill from Mary Campbell (Plainville, Mass./Bishop Feehan) to force the Warriors to take a time out. The remainder of the set was a back and forth battle and the Hounds trailed just 23-22, though the Warriors earn the final two points for the win.

- There were six lead changes in the fourth set alone, and Assumption fought back from being down 24-22 to take a 25-24 lead. The team then led 26-25, however, Nyack came through with the final last three points to escape with the 28-26 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption's Ariana Orcera (Guayanabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) led the entire match in digs with 17 with her teammate Alexandra Krawczyk (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) was a close second with 16 while dishing off 21 assists. Both Campbell and Orcera each added 10 kills.

- Nyack's Rachel Medin led the Warriors with 36 assists and 14 digs and her teammate Larreya Hayden led her team with 13 kills.

GAME TWO:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Assumption started off strong with a 25-20 win over NYIT in the first set. The Hounds never trailed in the set and took the final four points, securing the win on a kill by Smith.

- There were five lead changes in the second set and the Bears came up with the 25-16 win. In the third set the two teams were tied at 20 apiece before NYIT scored the last five points for the 25-20 victory. 

- Hounds held a lead through much of the fourth set before a run by the Bears gave them a 21-24 lead. Assumption won the next four points pull in front 25-24, but they fell short, 27-25, giving NYIT the match win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Orcera led the Hounds with 13 kills closely followed by teammates Campbell (10) and Smith (8). Smith led the Hounds with 22 digs followed by Kelly Dorandi (Plaistow, N.H./Methuen) with 16 and Orcera with 13.

- Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) led the Hounds with four blocks while Brenna Chrisom (Dover, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) had 21 assists in the match. Krawcyk posted a second straight double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs.

- Tiffany Verni led NYIT with 22 kills and seven digs, while Jamie Yonker had 21 digs and six assists.

UP NEXT:

- The Greyhounds are back on the court Sunday as they face LIU Post and Post at 12 & 2 p.m. on the campus of LIU Post.
