- Score: Assumption 1, Saint Anselm 0
- Records: Assumption (20-14, 8-8 NE10), Saint Anselm (6-25, 2-14)
- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Rocheleau Field)
- The Lead: With the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston High School) sent a pop-fly where nobody was in right field to lift the Assumption Greyhounds 1-0 over the Saint Anselm Hawks in walk-off fashion.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Assumption began the ninth with a single by Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford). The Hawks' David Hunter relieved starter Brian Wojichowski and allowed Trevor McQuade (Westwood, Mass. / Xaverian) to reach first after botching his bunt attempt back to the mound. He then walked pinch-hitter Dillon Zona (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury High School) on four-straight pitches to set up bases loaded for Lonardo. Saint Anselm brought in Danny Gracefa to face Lonardo and John Kelley as a fifth infielder, but Lonardo put it over the shift for the walk-off win.
-Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford High School) pitched all nine innings and kept the Hounds in it amidst a pitcher's duel. Chudoba scattered seven hits and walked none while striking out nine to earn the win. All seven hits off Chudoba were singles and only one runner got past second base. The biggest hole he got himself into came in the first inning when Chudoba allowed Enzo Merlonghi to take second on a throw-him-out play at third and later move up on a wild pitch. Chudoba forced the next batter he faced to fly out to end the inning and then went on to sit down six of the next seven batters he faced.
-The Hounds needed every bit of Chudoba's performance. Wojichowski matched zeroes with him for eight straight innings and into the ninth, pitching eight full innings and allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out six before being credited with the game-winning run. Wojichowski threw a total of 120 pitches and 85 for strikes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Thursday marked the second walk-off hit for Lonardo this season. He produced the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th against Merrimack in a 4-3 win back on April 2. Lonardo has knocked in 15 runs in his last 15 games and is now batting .283 on the year with a .403 on-base percentage.
-Chudoba improved to 7-3 on the year after Thursday's game and dropped his ERA from 2.91 to 2.48 with his performance. His seven wins so far puts Choduba into a tie for sixth for most wins in a season for the Hounds.
-The win moves the Hounds to 20-14 overall on the year. It is the first time the team has won 20 games in a season since 2010 when the team went 24-24.
