Swimming Places Third at Catholic Invitational

Chestnut Hill, Mass. (October 12) -- At the Catholic College Invitational this weekend, the Assumption College women's swimming and diving team placed third out of eight teams in the two-day event. The Hounds posted a 5-2 dual meet record in the event, which featured Assumption and seven Division I programs. Assumption finished with 338.5 points overall, falling to Boston College and Saint Francis.

Freshman Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) picked up a pair of victories, including a meet record in the 200 freestyle. In the 200 free, Waite touched in a time of 1:56.14 for her first Assumption win. She followed that with a victory in the 100 free, touching in 53.87 in that event. Freshman Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland/Sacred Heart School) also captured a victory as she won the 400 IM in a time of 4:47.87 to win that event by over three seconds.

Assumption also posted one relay victory in the meet as well, capturing the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:44.49. The team consisted of sophomore Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla./Sebastian River), freshman Bella Omobono (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), freshman  Bryanna Veroneau (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) and junior Maggie Ptaszynski (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire).

Sophomore Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine/Cony) picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. Weber touched in 2:13.76 in the 200 IM, along with a time of 1:00.99 in the 100 back. Morgan added a second-place showing in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:13.79, while sophomore Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) swam to a pair of third-place finishes at the two-day event. Gagnon touch in 1:08.75 in the 100 breaststroke as the top four were separated by just .21 seconds, along with a third-place effort in the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.60.

In addition to the two wins by Waite, she also finished fifth in the 50 free, touching in 25.04.

Assumption also had a runner-up finish in the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:02.64, along with third-place showings in the 200 freestyle relay to lead the meet off and the 200 medley relay. The 200 free relay team touched in 1:41.65, while the 200 medley team finished up in 1:51.81.

The 400 medley team consisted of Weber, Gagnon, senior Katherine Medeios (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) and Waite, while the 200 free team was made up of senior Elise Prayson (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter), Waite, Weber and sophomore Tricia Lee (Norwood, Mass./Norwood).

The 200 medley relay team that placed third featured freshman Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass./Matignon) swimming the leadoff leg, followed by Gagnon, Medeiros and Prayson to close out the race.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, October 18th as the Hounds host Sacred Heart University for a 4 p.m. start at the Plourde Recreation Center.
