CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Assumption women's rowing program used a pair of solid performances on Saturday to propel them into two strong showings in a pair of Knecht Cup Finals on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. this weekend.
In Saturday's Varsity 4 heat, the boat got off to a slow start but rebounded to finish third and qualify for the Sunday's Petite Final with its time of 8:37.18. The Hounds finished behind New Hampshire and Pittsburgh, but ahead of Rhode Island (8:43.46) and DII Thomas Jefferson (8:44.40). On Sunday the team placed fourth overall, dropping seven seconds with its time of 8:30.08 and beating Penn State by 0.23 seconds while finishing less than two seconds behind DII Mercyhurst (8:28.83).
The Varsity 8 found their groove in the final portion of their heat on Saturday to finish with a season-best time of 7:18.37 and qualify for the Grand Final on Sunday afternoon. Mercyhurst and New Hampshire finished just ahead of the Hounds in the race, but Assumption beat Franklin Pierce by 50 seconds. On Sunday the team struggled to capture its pace from Saturday, taking sixth with a time of 7:42.96.
Assumption returns to action next weekend when they compete against Mount Holyoke and Coast Guard on Lake Quinsigamond.
