Box Score

Syracuse, N.Y (November 27) -- Rallying from a 16-point halftime deficit, the Assumption men's basketball team tied the game late in regulation and held off Le Moyne in overtime for a 79-77 road victory over the Dolphins on Sunday afternoon at Grant Court. The win is the fourth straight for the Hounds.

Neither team led by more than four points in the opening 10 minutes of the first half and with 9:51 remaining, the game was tied at 15-15 after a deep three-pointer from Assumption's Cory Schmidt (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh). The Dolphins answered with an 11-3 run to make it a 26-18 margin and force a Greyhound timeout. After junior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored on a layup to stop the run, the Dolphins led by as many as 13 points before taking the 33-24 advantage into the halftime break. Schmidt and Quick led the Hounds with six points each, while Brian Zapisek led Le Moyne with nine points at the break on a trio of three-pointers. The two teams were a combined 6-for-22 from three-point land in the period.

Le Moyne came out firing in the second half and after just 2:56, the Dolphins held their biggest lead of the game with a 16-point advantage at 45-29. Behind a trio of three-pointers by senior Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) and a pair of triples from Mike Auriemma (Manchester, Conn./The Hun School), the Hounds came roaring back and with 11:08 left the visitors trailed by just five at 49-44. After a Le Moyne timeout, the Dolphins slowed down the Assumption charge with a three-pointer from the top of the key from Chris Johnson.

The two teams battled back and forth over the next seven minutes with neither team leading by more than five before the Hounds finally tied the game up at 56-56 with 4:26 left in the second half.

Zapisek gave the Dolphins the lead again and on a driving layup, followed by a three from the corner, before Donahue answered with a three-pointer of his own for a 61-59 margin with 3:15 remaining. Zapisek drilled a deep three for the Dolphins from the top of the key to push the lead back to 64-59 before back-to-back jumpers by Donahue and Quick pulled Assumption back to within 64-63 with 1:58 left.

After a free throw by Jim Janson made it a two-point game, the Hounds tied the game again on a layup by Quick with 33.7 seconds left in regulation. The Greyhounds were called for a foul with 0.2 seconds left to send Zapisek to the line with two chances to win the game. Zapisek missed both free throws though and the game headed into the overtime period.

Nate Champion knocked down a three for Le Moyne to start the overtime before the Hounds took their first lead since the 13:35 mark of the first half following a jumper by Auriemma and two free throws from Quick to make it 69-68 with 3:33 left.

The lead went back and forth over the next three minutes before Zapisek put Le Moyne in front 77-76 on a reverse layup with 36.0 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Quick had the ball under the hoop surrounded by two defenders before finding Beinert for the go-ahead layup and the foul. Beinert knocked down the free throw and a last-second possession for the Dolphins came up empty as the Hounds completed the comeback.

Quick led the Hounds with 23 points, along with 17 from Beinert and 16 from Quick. Zapisek led four Dolphins in double figures with 24 points.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Northeast-10 play, while the Dolphins are now 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Wednesday, November 30th as the team travels to the University of New Haven for a 5:30 p.m. start at Charger Gym.
