West Haven, Conn. (November 30) -- Rallying from a 10-point second-half deficit to pull within two in the final seconds, a last-second three-pointer was just wide as Assumption dropped a hard-fought 61-59 final to the University of New Haven on Wednesday evening at Charger Gym. The loss snaps Assumption's four-game winning streak.

The Hounds trailed just once in the opening minutes before a 7-2 scoring run midway thru the half, capped by a three-pointer from Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington), made it an 18-12 score with 8:10 left in the period. It was all New Haven for the next seven minutes though as the Chargers answered with a 13-0 run to seize control at 25-18 with 1:14 remaining in the half. After a baseline jumper from Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) ended the run, New Haven's Jeremy Williams nailed a three with 11 seconds on the clock to account for the 28-20 halftime margin.

Assumption came out of the halftime break on fire and used a 12-4 run, capped by a three from the top of the key by Donahue, to tie the game at 32-32 with 15 minutes left. After taking a 35-32 lead, the Chargers answered with a run of their own and with 8:41 left, New Haven held a 47-41 lead. Assumption climbed back to within one at 47-46 just moments later before the Chargers pushed the lead up to double digits at 56-46 after a three from Eric Anderson.

Trailing by as many as 11 points, the Hounds used a trio of three-pointers, including a triple from Quick, to get to within 61-59 with 54.2 seconds left. After a defensive stop, the Hounds called timeout with 12.8 seconds left to set up a final play. A three from Quick was just wide as the Chargers hung on for the victory. Donahue led three Hounds in double figures with 21 points, while Justin Exum was the lone Charger in double figures with 12 points.

With the loss, Assumption falls to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in Northeast-10 play, while New Haven improves to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in league action.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, December 3rd as the Hounds play host to Adelphi University for a 3:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
