Box Score Pleasantville, N.Y. (December 17) -- Assumption led by a 12-point margin early in the second half before Pace rallied for a 56-52 victory over the Hounds in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Athletic Center. The Pace win snaps a three-game winning streak for the Hounds in the series.
Assumption led from the outset and pushed out to a 14-6 lead after a layup from Jeff Stewart (Herndon, Va./Flint Hill School). Pace cut the lead back to four at 19-15 after a free throw by Jonathan Merceus before Assumption answered with a quick seven-point spurt, including a three-pointer from Cory Schmidt (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh). Leading by a 26-15 margin with under four minutes left in the opening period, the Hounds took a 29-22 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Setters quickly cut the lead down to 31-27 on a three-pointer from the corner by Ahmad George. Assumption answered though with a 9-3 run, capped by a runner from freshman Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic), for its largest lead of the game to that point at 42-30.
Pace, led by an eight-point outburst by Adrian Mills, cut the lead to 44-43 with 8:45 left to force an Assumption 30-second timeout. Mills knocked down a pair of threes, along with a fastbreak layup, to cut the lead to one. After Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) ended the run with a three-pointer for Assumption, Mills eventually tied the game at 47-47 with under seven minutes left.
Pace took its first lead of the game with 3:45 left as Keon Williams scored on a tip in for the 49-47 advantage. After the Hounds tied the game, the Setters' Denzel Primus-Devonish knocked down a jumper from the corner to regain the 51-49 edge. Mills extended the lead up to four with 1:26 on the clock on a runner in the lane for the Setters.
Assumption made it a one-point game again though at 53-52 as captain Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) knocked down a three-pointer as the shot clock was about to expire with 55.7 seconds left. After a missed three-pointer by the Setters, Pace pulled down the rebound and called a timeout with 32.4 seconds left.
George knocked down a pair of free throws with 17.2 seconds left to make it a 55-52 game, followed by a 30-second timeout by the Setters. A game-tying three by Donahue was just wide with seven seconds left before Pace knocked down a free throw with 2.4 seconds left to seal the game.
Donahue led the Hounds with 15 points, along with 14 points for Beinert.
With the loss, the Greyhounds slip to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Setters improve to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the league.
Assumption is now idle for 12 days before traveling to Philadelphia University for a 3 p.m. start on December 29th.
