Hounds Drop 63-60 Final to Visiting Adelphi on Saturday

Worcester, Mass. (December 3) -- Adelphi ended the game on an 11-4 run on Saturday afternoon as Assumption dropped a 63-60 final to the Panthers in Northeast-10 Conference action at Laska Gym. The Hounds led by a 56-52 margin with 4:04 left before Adelphi rallied for the victory as the teams had a combined six players in double figures.

After the two teams played an even opening 10 minutes, the visiting Panthers built the lead up to five points and led by as many as six points at 23-17 with 4:57 left following a three-pointer from Chris Ranglin. Six straight points from Assumption sophomore Cory Schmidt (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) equalized the game at 23-23 before junior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) gave the Hounds the lead at 25-23 with 1:55 on the clock. The teams went into the halftime break tied at 27-27 following a first half that had 18 combined turnovers while the Hounds shot 50 percent from the field to overcome a slow start.

With the game tied at 37-37 with 13:18 remaining, Assumption embarked on a 10-3 run to seize a 47-40 lead with 9:15 left, capped by a three-pointer from junior Mike Auriemma (Manchester, Conn./The Hun School).

Adelphi ended the run with five points from Ranglin, along with a three from Robert Johnson and a layup from Bradley Simpson to take the lead at 50-48 just 2:45 later. Assumption regained the lead though and with 3:20 remaining, the Hounds still held a one-point advantage at 56-55.

The Panthers built the lead up to five with 17.8 seconds left before freshman Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) dropped in a three-pointer from the corner to get the Hounds to within 62-60 with 5.6 seconds left. Richard Harkins knocked down one of two free throws in the final seconds to get the lead back to three before a three-point attempt by Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) was wide at the buzzer.

Zenevitch posted a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead four Hounds in double figures, while Ranglin led all scorers with 23 points for Adelphi.

With the loss, Assumption falls to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Northeast-10 play, while Adelphi improves to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in league action. The Hounds are back in action on Tuesday, December 6th as Saint Rose visits Laska Gym for a 7:30 p.m. start.
