Worcester, Mass. (February 23) -- A deep
three with 10 seconds left by Cory Schmidt (Center Valley,
Pa./Southern Lehigh) capped off a rally from six points
down with just 1:19 remaining as Assumption pulled out a 76-73 win
over Southern Connecticut on Senior Night. The Greyhounds trailed
by as many as 16 points in the second half before pulling off the
late rally.
Prior to the start of the game, the Greyhounds honored
seniors Mike Baldarelli (Sutton, Mass./Holy Name)
and Tobin Haase (Southold, N.Y./Ridgewood) for
their contributions to the Assumption College men's
basketball program during their careers.
Assumption jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead over the game's
opening minutes, capped by a three from Haase, before the Owls
mounted a rally. With the Greyhounds leading 23-22 with 6:36 left
in the first half, SCSU used an offensive explosion by
Trevon Hamlet to close on an 18-4 run and take a
commanding 40-27 lead into the halftime break. Hamlet led all
first-half scorers with 20 points, while Haase was the top
Assumption scorer with seven.
In the second period, the lead went to 16 at 49-33 with 15:54
remaining and was still in double digits until the midway point of
the half. Baldarelli knocked down a pair of free throws with 9:28
on the clock to get the lead down to nine and the hosts continued
to chip away until it got down to 65-62 after a jumper from
Bobby Harris (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional).
With the game sitting at 73-67 in favor of the Owls with just
1:19 remaining, Ronson Quick (Marlton,
N.J./Cherokee) knocked down a three to get the Hounds
within one possession. After an empty SCSU possession,
Lance Long intentionally fouled Assumption's
Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College)
and Rozsnaki hit one of two free throws to cut the lead down to
73-71. The Greyhounds maintained possession after the intentional
foul and set the stage for Schmidt's late heroics.
After Schmidt's three put the Hounds up, the Owls still
had a chance as they inbounded the ball with under 10 seconds left,
but the visitors turned it over and fouled Baldarelli, who knocked
down two free throws to seal the victory.
Baldarelli led the Greyhounds with 22 points as five Assumption
players finished in double figures. Haase was the team's
leading rebounder with eight boards, while also scoring 13 points
in his final career home game. Hamlet led the Owls with 30 points,
along with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double by Kieran
Ramsey.
The Greyhounds end the regular season at 12-16 overall and 9-13
in Northeast-10 play, while Southern Connecticut sits at 12-14
overall and 9-13 in league action. Assumption finishes the
Northeast-10 regular season as the No. 12 seed in the upcoming
Northeast-10 Tournament and will travel to No. 5 seed Saint Anselm
for a first-round game on Saturday, February 26th beginning at 1
p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
