Box Score Worcester, Mass. (January 7) -- Led by a career-high 29 points from senior Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington), the Assumption men's basketball team led for nearly the entire game as the Hounds came away with an 80-67 home win over Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gym.
Neither team led by more than five points in the opening 15 minutes before Assumption opened up an eight-point edge at 29-21 on a three-pointer from Mike Auriemma (Manchester, Conn./The Hun School) with five minutes left. After the Penmen cut the lead back down to two, the Hounds closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 39-29 edge into the break.
In the second half, the Hounds led by 12 points after a jumper by Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) before a 13-2 Penmen run made it a 43-42 margin with 14:01 left in the game. Assumption answered right back though with a 19-9 run before pulling away with the 13-point victory.
Donahue led all scorers with 29 points, including 5-of-10 from three-point land. Beinert finished with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double and junior Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) led both teams with 11 assists. Rozsnaki leads the Northeast-10 in assists and is ranked among the top five in the country in that category. Cory Schmidt (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) also finished in double figures with 11 points, including a trio of three-pointers.
Tory Stapleton led the Penmen with 14 points off the bench, along with 13 points from Aleksander Dobrovic and 11 from Greg DeSantis.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Penmen fall to 8-6 overall and 4-5 in the league. Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, January 11th as the Hounds host Stonehill College in a 7:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
