Donahue Layup Caps Late Double-Digit Rally

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (November 28) -- Trailing by a 56-46 margin with 3:07 left in the game, Assumption erupted on an 11-0 run that was capped by a layup by Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) with 1.5 seconds left, as the Hounds rallied past New Haven for a 57-56 win on Wednesday night.

Assumption improves to 6-0 for the first time since the 2003-2004 season and is receiving votes in this week's NABC/Division II National Top 25 Poll.

New Haven jumped out to an early 3-0 edge on a three from Justin Exum in the game' s opening seconds before a 6-0 run put the Hounds ahead by a 6-3 margin. Assumption led by as many as eight points over the remainder of the period before taking a 32-25 lead into the halftime break. The Hounds built the eight-point advantage with 1:10 left after a three-pointer from Donahue. Sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc Tech) led the Hounds with 10 points, including a pair of thunderous dunks.

In the second half, the Hounds led 39-30 with 17:18 left following a layup from Bobb-Jones and were in control. New Haven answered though and with under 10 minutes remaining, Joshua Guddemi dropped in a three from the corner for the Chargers that gave New Haven the lead at 45-43. The lead was the first for the Chargers since the early minutes of the game.

Senior Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) briefly tied the game at 45 before a 6-0 New Haven run gave the visitors a 51-45 lead with 7:12 left, forcing an Assumption timeout. The Chargers stretched the lead up to 10 at 56-46 with 3:07 left after an Exum three from in front of the New Haven bench. Assumption hung tough though as senior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) answered immediately with a three, followed by a Greyhound timeout with2:56 left. On the ensuing Hounds possession, Quick drilled another three from the top of the key and the lead was quickly down to four with two minutes remaining.

After a defensive stop on the other end for the Hounds, Quick kept up the magic as he hit his third straight three-pointer to get Assumption back to within 56-55 with 1:26 on the clock. After empty possessions by both teams, the Hounds pulled down a rebound with nine seconds left before Donahue was fouled with 2.8 seconds remaining. Assumption inbounded the ball to a cutting Donahue, who laid the ball in for the game-winning hoop. A last-second New Haven shot from three-quarter court was just wide as the Hounds capped off the double-digit comeback.

Quick led the Hounds with 16, along with 15 from Bobb-Jones. Rozsnaki nearly posted a triple-double as he registered seven points, seven assists and a game-high 13 rebounds. Exum led three Chargers in double figures with 14 points.

The Hounds improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10, while New Haven falls to 1-4 overall and remains winless in the league at 0-3.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, December 1st as the Hounds travel to Adelphi University for a Northeast-10 Conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
