Hounds Improve to Region-Best 7-0 With Win

Garden City, N.Y. (December 1) -- Trailing 44-37 with 11:23 remaining, the Assumption men's basketball team put together a 10-0 run to take the lead with seven minutes left and held off Adelphi for a 55-52 road win on Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten at 7-0. Assumption is receiving votes in this week's NABC/Division II National Top 25 Poll.

Adelphi opened the game on a 14-7 run over the first eight minutes of the game before Assumption cut the lead to 18-16 after a layup from freshman Tim Kasper (Cologne, Germany/Gymnasium Schloss Hagerhof). The Panthers put together a 12-0 run though to extend the lead out to double digits before taking a 32-23 edge into the half.

Assumption came out with energy to start the second half and cut the lead to 36-31 with 16:19 left after a reverse layup from senior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). The Panthers maintained control though and held a comfortable seven-point advantage midway thru the half. The Hounds clamped down over the next five minutes though with a 10-0 run, capped by two layups from Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic), to jump out to a 47-44 lead with 6:55 remaining.

Edward Sullivan dropped in a pair of free throws for Adelphi to cut the lead back to one before a three-point play from senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) and a bank shot from Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc Tech) gave Assumption its largest lead at 52-46 with 3:03 remaining. Adelphi cut the lead down to one possession twice, but three Hound free throws down the stretch sealed the victory.

Beinert led the Hounds with 15 points, along with 12 from Quick and 11 from Bobb-Jones. Senior Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) led the team with a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with four assists. Assumption shot a blistering 64.7 percent in the second half as the Hounds pounded the ball inside. The Hounds were also 10-for-12 from the line in the second half after struggling in the early going.

John Calarco led Adelphi with 20 points, along with 13 from Bradley Simpson.

With the win, Assumption improves to a region-best 7-0 overall and sits in first place in the league with a 5-0 Northeast-10 mark. Adelphi drops to 2-5 overall and is now 1-3 in league play.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, December 5th as the Hounds travel to the College of Saint Rose for a 7:30 p.m. start in Albany, N.Y.
