Free Throw in Final Second Saves Hounds

Box Score

Albany, N.Y. (December 5) -- Senior forward Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) knocked down a free throw with 0.6 seconds left to lift No. 24 ranked Assumption to an improbable 59-58 comeback win over Saint Rose on Wednesday night. The Hounds trailed by as many as 14 points before rallying for the win to remain the lone unbeaten team in the East region.

Assumption jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead over the opening two minutes, capped by an alley oop dunk from sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc Tech).

Assumption jumped out to a 16-10 lead before the Golden Knights tied the game at 16-16 on three-pointer from 10 feet behind the line by Dan Mundweiler. The Hounds regained the lead though on another thundering dunk from Bobb-Jones from the right side.

With Assumption leading by a 20-18 margin with 6:24 left in the half, the Golden Knights seized control of the game as they closed the half on a 21-5 run to take a 39-25 lead into the halftime break. Bobb-Jones led the Hounds with eight points in the half as Assumption shot just 32.4 percent from the field in the period.

The Hounds cut into the lead early in the half and got it down to eight with 16:48 left on a three from the top of the key from senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross). Assumption cut the lead all the way to 49-44 with 11:06 remaining on a three from the corner from graduate student Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington). Saint Rose stretched it back out to 11, but Donahue answered right back with a three-point play with 6:32 left to cut the edge back to 57-49.

Assumption kept the pressure up and on a Bobb-Jones layup with 4:06 left, the lead was down to just one at 57-56. Following a free throw by Saint Rose, Assumption finally tied the game on another layup by Bobb-Jones with 3:27 left to knot things up at 58-58.

Both teams missed opportunities before Assumption got the ball back in the final seconds and called timeout. Inbounding the ball with 2.6 seconds left to Beinert, he found Quick cutting to the basket and he was fouled with just 0.6 seconds left. After missing the first free throw, Quick knocked down the second to cap off the fourth-straight comeback win for the Hounds. Assumption has now won its last four games by a total of eight points. The Hounds held Saint Rose to just one point over the last 6:53 of the game to help key the win.

Bobb-Jones led the Hounds with 16 points and eight rebounds, along with 15 points for Donahue as they both played all 40 minutes. Beinert added 10 points as well, along with seven rebounds, in 37 minutes of play.

Mundweiler and Kareem Thomas led the Golden Knights with 14 points each, along with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double from Milka and 11 points from Andre Pope.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in Northeast-10 play, while the Golden Knights fall to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Monday, December 17 as the Hounds play host to Le Moyne College for a 7:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
