Worcester, Mass. (January 19) -- No. 23 ranked Assumption led by as many as 21 points in the second half before holding off Saint Anselm in a 95-89 home win in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Laska Gym. The Hounds, ranked No. 23 in this week's NABC/Division II National Poll, are now two games clear of the rest of the Northeast-10 and have won four straight games.
In the first half, Assumption shot a blistering 70 percent from the field as the Hounds quickly built a double-digit lead. Saint Anselm got its offense going late in the opening period, but the Hounds took a 45-32 lead into the break.
Saint Anselm cut the lead to eight in the early going of the second half after a three from junior Dino Mallios made it 45-37. Assumption answered through with a huge run and with 9:15, the Hounds were in firm control at 74-53. The Hawks kept up the pressure on the defensive end as the teams traded baskets and Assumption still led by an 86-74 margin with just 2:42 remaining.
The Hawks weren't done as a three-pointer from Roy Mabrey ignited a run to make it a six-point game with 1:16 remaining. Saint Anselm was able to pull to within four points in the final minute, but a pair of free throws from graduate student Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) with five seconds left sealed the game for the Hounds.
All five Assumption starters finished in double figures, led by a 25-point effort from senior forward Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). Senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) posted 18 points, along with 13 from Donahue and sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc-Tech). Senior Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) ended the game with 12 points, a team-high nine rebounds and seven assists.
Mabrey led four Hawks in double figures with 26 points, including five three-pointers to go along with seven rebounds. Mallios and Matt McCahey added 18 points each, along with 10 off the bench from Chris Santo.
With the win, the Hounds now sit at a region-best 13-2 overall and 10-1 in Northeast-10 play, while Saint Anselm falls to 12-3 overall and 8-3 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, January 23rd as the Hounds host Franklin Pierce University for a 7:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
