Worcester, Mass. (January 9) -- Led by a 25-point effort from graduate student Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington), the Assumption College men's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 69-58 victory over visiting Bentley University on Wednesday night at Laska Gym. Donahue surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career on a three-pointer late in the game, becoming the third member of this year's team and 42nd all-time Assumption player to reach the milestone.
Assumption, which ranks among the national leaders in field goal percentage defense, is receiving votes in this week's NABC/Division II National Top 25 Poll.
The Hounds started out hot and jumped out to a 12-0 lead just 3:09 into the game following a three-pointer from senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross). Bentley answered with a 9-1 run to cut the lead down to 13-9 as neither team led by more than eight over the rest of the first half. Assumption took a 28-25 lead into the halftime break behind 11 points from behind and five three-pointers as a team.
In the second half, the Hounds quickly built the lead into double digits and led by as many as 20 points at 63-43 after a three from Donahue that put him over the 1,000-point plateau. The Hounds led by at least 11 points over the remaining minutes for their second straight win over Bentley.
Donahue led the Hounds with 25 points, along with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double from Beinert. Jasper Grassa led Bentley with 14 points, along with 10 points from Alex Furness.
With the win, Assumption improves to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the Northeast-10, while Bentley falls to 5-7 overall, 3-5 in league play and has now lost three straight.
