Box Score

Melbourne, Fla. (November 15) -- In non-conference action on Friday night in Florida, the Assumption College men's basketball team dropped a 78-72 overtime final to Florida Tech at the Clemente Center.

The teams were even thru the first eight minutes of play before an Assumption 14-4 run, capped by a spinning layup by freshman Kamali Bey (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy), gave the Hounds a 20-12 lead with just over eight minutes left in the opening period. The Panthers chipped away though and in the final minute, the hosts converted on a tip-in and then scored in the final seconds off a loose ball in the free throw lane to take a 24-23 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, the teams were tied at 44-44 with 10:40 left after a long three from Florida Tech, but the Hounds maintained a one-point lead with under five minutes to go. Three baskets by junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc-Tech) and a turnaround jumper from Bey stretched the lead up to six at 63-57 with three minutes left before the Panthers rallied to force the overtime period.

Assumption held a 65-64 lead in the final seconds of regulation before Corbin Jackson went to the line with a chance to give the Panthers the lead. His first one came up short before he made the second to tie the game up at 65-65. Assumption advanced the ball and eventually called a timeout with 13.4 seconds left and had a chance in the final second in the post that was off as the game headed into the extra period.

Florida Tech went to the line repeatedly in the overtime period and led by as many as eight points in the extra session before coming away with the six-point victory.

Bobb-Jones led the Hounds with a 19-point, 16-rebound double-double, along with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds from junior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic). Bey nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine boards, while sophomore Chris Fitzgerald (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) added 11 points. Assumption owned the Panthers on the boards, outrebounding them by a 53-40 margin. At the free throw line, the Hounds had just 13 attempts while the Panthers were sent to the line 32 times as they hit just 20 of those attempts.

Chris Carter led the Panthers with 22 points, along with a 22-point, 15-rebound double-double from Corbin Jackson and 18 points from Jermaine Jackson.

With the loss, the Hounds drop to 1-2 on the season, while the Panthers improve to a perfect 3-0 overall.

Assumption is back in action on Sunday afternoon as the Hounds take on Lynn University for a 2 p.m. start in Boca Raton, Fla.
