Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. (November 9) -- In the 2013-2014 season opener on Saturday evening, the Assumption College men's basketball team rallied from an early double-digit deficit to cut the lead to one in the final minutes before the Hounds dropped a 48-45 final to Holy Family University at the East Region Classic.
Assumption trailed by a 21-6 margin with 10 minutes left in the first half, but a three by freshman Marcus Murray (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy) with 10 minutes left ended that stretch to begin a scoring push by the Hounds. The visitors closed the second half of the opening period on a 15-7 run, capped by a late tip-in from freshman Jack Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus), to make it a 28-21 halftime margin.
In the second half, the Tigers jumped out to a 12-point lead before a pair of dunks from junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc-Tech) cut the lead down to just three at 41-38 with 8:37 left. The Hounds nearly came all the way back on a Bobb-Jones layup with 1:19 on the clock cut the lead down to 46-45.
In the final seconds, the Tigers were up two and had a pair of free throws to seal the game. Holy Family missed the second though, which was rebounded by junior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) to give the Hounds one more chance as they called timeout with 11 seconds left. On the final play of the game, a three from Sullivan was off the mark as the rally came up just short.
Bobb-Jones led the Hounds with a 16-point, 15-rebound, three-assist, three-steal showing, while Ervin Ezell was the top Tiger scorer with 12 points. Alberto Munoz also posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. As a team, Assumption outrebounded the Tigers by a 51-26 margin, including an impressive 21-4 edge on the offensive boards.
With the loss, Assumption drops to 0-1 overall, while Holy Family improves to 1-0 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, November 10th as the Hounds take on Philadelphia University for a 2 p.m. start at Holy Family.
