 West Haven, Conn. (February 13) -- After a tip-in at the buzzer by senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) forced overtime, the Assumption College men's basketball team came up short in a 70-64 overtime loss at the University of New Haven on Wednesday night.
New Haven came out quick and with 12:21 left, the Chargers held their biggest lead of the period at 16-10 after a three from Mark Palmieri. New Haven continued to lead at 22-17 with 7:18 left before the Hounds clamped down and ended the half on a 10-0 run to take the 27-22 edge into the halftime break. Four different players scored in the 10-point run, capped by a jumper from graduate student Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) as he finished the period with 11 points.
In the second, Assumption built the lead up to nine early on before the Chargers slowly chipped away and closed to within one at 41-40 with 11:18 remaining. New Haven regained the lead at the 8:53 mark following back-to-back layups from Eric Anderson before the Hounds rallied to tie the game. The game stayed tied until the six-minute mark when sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc Tech) scored on a layup for the 52-50 edge.
New Haven came right back though and built a four-point advantage with under four and continued to lead by a four-point margin at 59-55 with just 7.9 left. Assumption closed the lead to two on a layup by Beinert with 2.4 seconds left and after one failed attempt to inbound the ball, the Hounds tried again with just 2.2 left.
After a lob to Bobb-Jones came up short, along with another putback attempt, Beinert finally managed to tip the ball in at the buzzer to send the Hounds into overtime for the third time this season.
In the overtime period, the Hounds missed five three throw attempts and never led as the Chargers jumped out to a 66-60 lead. The Hounds used a basket by Donahue to get within 68-64 with 10.3 seconds left, but that was as close as Assumption got before dropping the 70-64 final.
Donahue led all scorers with 21 points, along with a 15-point effort from Bobb-Jones and a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double by Beinert. Senior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led the Hounds with a 12-rebound effort.
Anderson led four Chargers in double figures with a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double to key the win.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 16-6 overall and 13-5 in Northeast-10 play, while New Haven improves to 15-7 overall and 12-6 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, February 16th as the Hounds host Adelphi University for a 3:30 p.m. start as part of the annual "Play4Kay" weekend that raises money for breast cancer research thru the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation.
