Worcester, Mass. (February 16) -- Led by a 16-point, 13-rebound effort from senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross), Assumption improved to 17-6 overall with a 66-53 home win over Adelphi on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The game was part of the "Play 4 Kay" event that benefits breast cancer research, sponsored by the WBCA. All proceeds raised in this event, along with Wednesday's game with Saint Rose, will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Prior to the start of the game, Beinert, graduate student Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) and senior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) were honored for reaching the 1,000-point during a two-game span earlier this season. The trio (pictured to the right) was presented with commemorative basketballs in honor of their achievements.
In the opening four minutes, the Hounds jumped out to a commanding 14-3 lead, capped by a three-point play from Beinert. The Panthers answered quickly with a 13-4 run of their own to close to within 18-16 with 7:31 left after a tip-in from Nayguann Mitchell. Assumption maintained at least a two-point lead the rest of the half and took a 25-22 edge into the break.
The Hounds stretched the lead out to nine early in the second before a 7-0 Adelphi run, capped by a jumper from John Calarco, closed the lead to 31-29 with 14:50 left. Assumption put the game out of reach with a 16-2 scoring run of its own, capped by a pair of Donahue free throws, as the Hounds put the game out of reach at 47-31. Adelphi cut the lead down to seven with 3:12 left, but the Hounds quickly stretched it back into double digits to complete the series sweep of the Panthers.
Sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc Tech) led the Hounds with 15 points, along with 14 by Quick, 11 from Donahue and Beinert's 16-point, 13-rebound double-double. Cliff Brown led Adelphi with 17 points, along with 10 points and nine rebounds by Bradley Simpson.
With the win, Assumption improves to 17-6 overall and 14-5 in league play, while Adelphi drops to 12-13 overall and below .500 in Northeast-10 play at 9-10. The Hounds now sit alone in third place with three games to play in the regular season and are one game back of first-place Saint Anselm and Franklin Pierce.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, February 20th as the Hounds welcome the College of Saint Rose for a 7:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
