Worcester, Mass. (February 26) -- On Senior Night at Laska Gym, the Assumption College men's basketball team rallied for a 68-63 win over American International to secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Assumption is receiving votes in the NABC/Division II National Poll for the second straight week.
Prior to the game, the Hounds honored seniors Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross), Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington), Akil Hodge (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) for their contributions to the program during their Assumption careers.
Assumption jumped to a 16-13 lead over the opening 10 minutes, capped by a jumper from Quick. The Yellow Jackets quickly answered though with a 9-1 run, capped by a three-point play from Ricky Hudson with 7:42 left, to push the visitors in front by a 22-17 margin. The Hounds came back before another Yellow Jacket surge sent the game into the halftime break at 29-27 in favor of the American International. Rozsnaki led the Hounds with 10 points, while Hudson led the Yellow Jackets with 11 in the period.
The Hounds came out firing in the second half and ran out to a four-point lead at 37-33 after a layup from sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc-Tech). The Yellow Jackets regained the lead twice more, including at 41-40 on a three from Sesoo Ikpah, before the Hounds took control of the game. Assumption led by as many as eight in the period before the visitors cut the lead back down to two on a three from the corner by Spencer Braithwaite. The Hounds wrapped things up with 12.6 seconds left as Donahue got fouled taking a deep three and converted two of three free throws to extend the lead to 67-63. Quick knocked down another free throw with 0.9 seconds left to account for the five-point final.
Beinert led four Hounds in double figures with 17 points, along with 16 points from Donahue. Rozsnaki posted a 15-point, 10-assist double-double and Quick finished with an 11-point effort. Hudson led all scorers with 20 point for the Yellow Jackets, along with 14 points from David Campbell.
The Hounds complete the regular season at 20-6 overall and 17-5 in Northeast-10 play. The 20-win season is the 16th all-time for the Assumption men's program and first under second-year head coach Matt Mahar.
The Yellow Jackets finish up the 2012-2013 campaign at 9-17 overall and 6-16 in league action.
Assumption returns to action in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Quarterfinals as the Hounds will host the winner of the No. 7 Adelphi/No. 10 Saint Rose game on Sunday, March 3rd at Laska Gym beginning at 4 p.m. That will game will be available live online at www.assumptiongreyhounds.tv with Roei Biberstain calling all the action from Worcester.
