Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (January 11) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men's basketball team dropped a 70-51 final to the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play at Laska Gym. The game marks just the fourth home game of the season for the Hounds.

New Haven led from the outset as the Chargers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening minute after a three-pointer from senior guard Justin Exum. The visitors extended the lead up to 17-9 and eventually into double figures at 21-11 following a Samir McDaniels layup at 11:25 left in the first half. Over the next 3:46 though, Assumption went on a 9-2 run to pull within three at 23-20 following a layup from junior captain Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic). The Chargers closed the period on a 12-3 run however, led by 10 first-half points from Eric Anderson, to take a 35-23 lead into the halftime break. New Haven shot 46.4 percent from the field in the half, but was just 1-for-8 from three-point land. The Chargers also held a 22-16 edge on the boards, including 17-12 on the defensive end.

The Chargers came out firing in the opening minutes of the second half, pushed the lead up to 50-27 with 14:43 left as New Haven opened the period on a 15-4 run. Assumption answered with a run of its own though as the Hounds scored 11 unanswered to close to within 50-38 after a Zenevitch layup with 10:14 left.

The Hounds closed to within 11 on a number of occasions, including at 59-48 with 3:07 left on a slashing fastbreak layup from freshman guard Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School). That was the closest that Assumption would get though as the Chargers came away with the eventual 19-point victory.

Zenevitch led the Hounds with 19 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the field while adding a team-high nine rebounds in the near double-double. Reid also finished in double figures for the third time this season and second time in the last three games.

All five Charger starters finished in double figures, including a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double from Anderson to lead New Haven in scoring. Cyrus James also had a double-double with an 11-point, 12-rebound outing.

New Haven went to the line a remarkable 34 times compared to just 10 for Assumption, with the Chargers knocking down 24 from the stripe to outscore the Hounds 24-4 at the free throw line. Both teams struggled from three-point land, combining for 7-for-37 shooting from deep as the teams finished nearly even in scoring from three.

With the loss, Assumption falls to 3-11 overall and 1-8 in the Northeast-10, while New Haven improves to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, January 14th as the Hounds host Le Moyne College for a 7:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
