Holden, Mass. (October 14) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team swept American International on Tuesday afternoon at Wachusett Regional High School, 9-0, its seventh victory over a Northeast-10 Conference opponent this season, tying the program record and clinching an NE-10 playoff berth.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 7-7 overall, 7-5 NE-10 while AIC drops to 0-11 on the season (0-11 NE-10).
The Hounds swept doubles competitions on two victories and a forfeit win. Freshman Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) and sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) paired up at No. 1 doubles to take an 8-6 victory over the Yellow Jackets' Ana Paula Simoes and Isabela Daudt.
In the No. 2 doubles match, freshman Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) and sophomore Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) swept AIC's Eleanna Fulop and Chizani Douglas, 8-0 to put the Hounds up by two.
In singles competition, junior Cassy Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) swept Douglas at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0 while junior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against Fulop.
Riley earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Daudt at No. 2 singles while Burbine battled it out at No. 1 singles, ultimately taking the match in three sets after dropping the first set.
With the win, the Hounds clinch an NE-10 playoff spot and will compete in the NE-10 quarterfinals at a time and place to be announced.
