Holden, Mass. (October 5) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team swept Franklin Pierce on Sunday by a score of 9-0 at Wachusett Regional High School for their second shutout of the season. Three Hounds swept their individual matches 6-0, 6-0 on the day.
With the win, Assumption improves to 5-6 overall (5-4 NE-10) while the Ravens drop to 1-9 (1-9 NE-10).
The Hounds kicked off the day's match with three straight doubles wins, all earned by six points or more. In the No. 1 doubles match, freshman Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) teamed up with sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) to claim an 8-2 victory over FPU's Kirby Melbourne and Leslie Rodgers.
The Hounds also pulled off an 8-2 win in the No. 2 doubles match off the rackets of junior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) and sophomore Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy).
In the No. 3 doubles match, junior Kendra Sloan (West Boylston, Mass. / West Boylston) and sophomore Santina Marinelli (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven) made their first appearances of the season for Assumption, posting an 8-1 victory.
In singles competition, Burbine, who was the only Hound to compete in both singles and doubles play, swept the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) followed suit in the No. 2 singles match, topping Sonia Rodrigues 6-0, 6-0.
The third Hound to post a shutout was junior Paige Palmero (Trumbull, Conn. / Lauralton Hall) in her second showing of the season. She earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Ravens' Maria Quagliano in the No. 5 singles match.
Also competing for Assumption was junior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon), who battled for a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, and junior Cassy Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) who earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
Senior Melanie McCauley (Charlestown, R.I. / Chariho Regional) won a close 6-4 set at No. 6 singles before sweeping the second, 6-0, for the win.
Sunday's match marks the second time this season that the Hounds have posted a complete shutout, the first was on Sept. 21 against Saint Rose.
