Colchester, Vt. (October 8) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 final on the road on Wednesday afternoon at Saint Michael's. With the loss, the Hounds drop to 5-7 overall (5-5 NE-10) while the Purple Knights improve to 7-3 on the season (7-3 NE-10).
Freshman Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) helped earn both points for Assumption while pairing with sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) in the No. 2 doubles match. The duo topped Saint Michael's Erica Bundrick and Alexandra Sulkin in an 8-4 victory.
Vila also competed at No. 2 singles where she won both sets 7-6 over Nicole Kellog. She earned set one after a 7-2 tiebreaker, followed by a 7-5 tiebreaker in set two to clinch the win.
Freshman Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) pushed the No. 1 singles match to three sets after falling 6-1 in the first set. She came back to take the second from Bundrick 6-3 before dropping the third 6-2.
One other Hound went to three sets on the day. Freshman Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) took the first set at No. 4 singles 6-3, before falling in set two 6-1. After a hard-fought battle, she fell in set three, 6-3.
Riley dropped her first singles set in the No. 3 match 7-6 after a close 7-5 tiebreaker and was defeated in set two 6-2.
Assumption is set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11, as they travel to Saint Anselm for an 11 a.m. contest.
