Worcester, Mass. (November 16) -- Led by five players in double figures, the Assumption College men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 77-63 victory over Dominican College on day two of the Northeast-10/CACC Conference Challenge.
Assumption jumped out to an early 12-5 lead before Dominican's Sean O'Reilly hit a three from the left wing to cut the lead down to 12-8 with 15:50 on the clock. The Hounds stretched the lead out to eight with 13:37 left in the first after a baseline jumper by senior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) and a three-pointer from the right side by junior Tre Owens (Rota, Spain/Rota). After a steal by junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./DelCastle-Voc Tech) on the defensive end, the Hounds converted that into another Owens triple to stretch the lead into double figures at 22-11 with under 13 minutes left in the half. A Bobb-Jones dunk capped off a 10-0 run for the Hounds, making it a 24-11 lead.
Assumption led by as many as 17 in the period, including at 41-24 with 2:13 left in the opening half after a layup from sophomore Kamali Bey (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy). Bey again made it a 17-point margin with 1:18 left after a putback layup as he ended the first half with eight points. Assumption eventually took a 43-29 advantage into the halftime break as the Hounds shot 55.2 percent from the field and were 5-for-9 from three-point land in the period.
Defensively, the Hounds forced eight turnovers and held the Chargers to just 1-for-8 shooting from deep. Owens led Assumption with 11 points behind a trio of three-pointers in the first half, while Joe Clinton paced Dominican with 11 of his own.
In the second half, Owens drove the lane for a layup with 16:31 on the clock for the 47-35 lead. Over the next 2:08 though, a pair of threes by O'Reilly and a deep three by Clinton triggered a 9-2 run that cut the lead to just 49-44. Dominican cut the lead all the way down to four at 51-47 after the second of two free throws, but the Hounds answered with six points in 21 seconds to stretch the lead back to double digits. Owens hit his fourth triple of the game from the left wing and after an empty Charger possession, junior Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia/Hallam Senior College) dropped in a three from the corner to force a Dominican timeout.
The Chargers made it a six-point game at 63-57 with under seven minutes left, but the Hounds quickly extended that lead back out to double digits. Assumption again led by as many as 17 at 76-59 after a pair of free throws by junior Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va./Annandale) with 1:12 left before coming away with the eventual 77-63 victory.
Owens paced the Hounds with 16 points behind 4-for-5 shooting from three, along with 12 points each from Ziegler and Bey. Zenevitch added 11 points and seven rebounds, along with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists from Bobb-Jones.
Clinton led the Chargers with 18 points, along with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds from Nick Smith and 12 points from O'Reilly.
For the game, the Hounds shot 50.8 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from three-point land and forced 12 Charger turnovers.
With the win, Assumption evens its record at 1-1 overall, while Dominican opens at 0-2.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, November 19th when the Hounds open Northeast-10 Conference play at home vs. Bentley University. That game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Laska Gym.
