Hounds Come Up Short in Divisional Matchup

Manchester, N.H. (February 22) -- On Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym, the Assumption College men's basketball team dropped a 94-63 final to first-place Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play.

Over the first 1:20 of play, the Hounds led by a 4-2 margin after a layup from senior Emiliano Void (Montreal, Quebec/Lockeport Regional) before an 18-0 Saint Anselm run put the game in control of the Hawks. Over a span of 3:43, the Hawks used four points each by Dino Mallios and Chris Santo to jump out to the 20-4 lead. A pair of free throws from junior captain Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) ended the run, but Saint Anselm extended the lead up to 20 at 37-17 with 6:31 remaining in the first half following a basket from senior John Neilsen. Roy Mabrey hit a three for the Hawks with 3:56 left in the first for the 44-22 advantage, along with a Mike McCahey three with three seconds left in the period to account for the 53-28 halftime margin.

Just 4:45 into the second half, Chris Santo knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the lead out to 67-32 in favor of the Hawks. Saint Anselm remained in control over the next 10 minutes of play and led by as many as 41 at 90-49 with 4:40 left after two free throws by Ryan Hartung. Assumption closed the game on a 14-4 run, led by five points from freshman Marcus Murray (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy) and four points from sophomore Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J./Randolph).

Murray led the Hounds with a 15-point effort to go along with three assist, along with an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double by sophomore Tim Kasper (Cologne, Germany/Gymnasium Schloss Hagerhof). Aiken also added the double-double, posting 11 points and 11 rebounds. The double-doubles were the first of their careers for both Kasper and Aiken.

Assumption shot 38.7 percent from the field for the game, but held a 44-33 rebounding edge that featured a 15-3 advantage on the offensive glass.

For the Hawks, Mabrey led the team with 24 points to go along with 14 from senior John Neilsen and 12 from Santo. Mallios added six assists, along with eight rebounds from McCahey. Saint Anselm shot 51.7 percent from the field, hit nine three-pointers and was 23-for-28 from the free throw line (82.1 percent).

With the loss, the Hounds falls to 7-18 overall and 5-15 in Northeast-10 play, while the Hawks improve to 18-6 overall and 16-4 in the league.

The Hounds are back in action on Tuesday, February 25th as the team travels to Southern New Hampshire University for a 7:30 p.m. start in the 2013-2014 season finale.
